The Fond Memories of Tough Love

My dad is someone I aspire to be like.

When I was younger, he raised us with tough love. As my siblings and I grew older, we appreciated it because we see how it molded us into good people and we respect him so much more because of that.

Now that my siblings and I are all adults, my dad has become our friend. He is fun to be around. What I admire most about him is that he is always himself, no matter who is around. He does what is right, works hard and gives us space to figure life out for ourselves. Once in a while he will share some of his wisdom with us if he thinks we’re open to it.

He treats my mom with love, respect and adoration. Let’s just say he’s set the bar high for any of the men my sister and I date.

The other day, I was chatting with a complete stranger, and we started talking about how much respect we have for our fathers, raising us with tough love, which is not too common these days.

This kind stranger went on to tell me how when he was younger, he told his dad he needed the newest sneakers. His dad told him to stick his head in a bucket of water and when he needed air his head would come up for air. He said that is the difference between wanting and needing! (He didn’t actually do that, just said it).

It’s stories like this that make a huge impact, jam packed with memorable lessons and create good morals in a person.

Love doesn’t mean always saying yes. Part of loving is knowing when to say no and how to do what’s best for the other person- not what’s easiest.

I have so much respect for parents who raise their kids with their kids future in mind, because some day those kids will be adults and may be raising kids of their own.
